Dean was the youngest of three children and the only boy. He was a curious little boy that loved being outdoors. Dean had an aptitude for sports at a young age and became a talented athlete known as an exceptional football player that helped lead the Meridian Trojans to State. He is noted in the top five hundred for Whatcom County Football for all-league tight end (1984) and all-league defensive line (1983). Dean also played basketball, baseball and ran track.
His kind spirit and bigger than life personality made him popular among his friends. Dean was an encourager to his friends and always saw the best in people. In his last days, he was blessed by visits and calls from many friends he impacted through his life.
Dean married Nancy Laninga on August 1987 and they were married for 25 years. They had three amazing children, which were the joy of Dean's life. He loved coaching and watching them play sports. Family was very important to Dean, and he was very proud of his children.
Dean enjoyed watching any type of sport. In his later years, he enjoyed watching his grandkids, nephews and nieces play any sport they were competing in.
Dean worked as a welder for many sign companies. He was a talented creator, builder and installer of signs.
Dean attended Valley Baptist Church. He was supported and loved by his church family. He attended almost every Sunday with his mom. His pastor, Harold Thornbrough, was a great support over the last few years as his health issues worsened and would cover Dean in prayer to help him face what was before him.
