Geary Scott Thompson, 85, of Mount Vernon, Washington, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, January 23, 2026.

Geary was born on May 10, 1940, in Seattle, Washington, to Hugh G. and Grace O. (Deane) Thompson. He was raised alongside his siblings Thomas, Nancy, and Hugh Thompson, with whom he shared a lifelong bond.

Geary proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he was a member of the Navy Band before retiring from military service. Music was not only his profession but his lifelong passion. He went on to earn a Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, and Ph.D. in Music from Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. In addition to performing and teaching, Geary had a deep interest in developing new musical instruments and exploring sound in innovative ways.

In 1960, Geary married the love of his life, Mary Lou, in Virginia. She remained his one and only until her passing in 2018. Together, they shared many adventures while stateside, living in Norfolk, Virginia; Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Everett, Washington; San Diego, California; and Wenatchee, Washington, before settling in Mount Vernon.

Geary was a man of many friendships and was especially close to his dear friend Warren Bobblet. He also belonged to the exclusive Cowboy Club in California, an affiliation he greatly enjoyed.

Geary is survived by his stepdaughter, Sabrina; his son, Walter; his brothers, Thomas and Hugh Thompson; his sister, Nancy; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews who will cherish his memory.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary Lou (2018), his mother Grace Thompson (1996), and his father Hugh Thompson (2000).

A Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026 from 12:00 to 3:00pm at the Cedar Club, 1012 Cypress Ct., Burlington, WA 98233. Geary was laid to rest at Tahoma National Cemetery with Military Honors.
