Ivan 'Malloy' Rowland, age 89, a longtime resident of Concrete, Washington, passed away July 14, 2024 at his home of 50 years. He was born October 12, 1934 in Sedro-Woolley, WA to Ivan Marcellus and Elmeretta Marie (Brown) Rowland.

He married his high school sweetheart Norma Janice Maupin before they even were out of school. He made an agreement with his new mother and father-in-law that he would be sure she continued with school and graduate. He also remembered having to write her notes for when she was absent from school. Out of this marriage, they welcomed three daughters, Debbie Kay Rowland, Terry Lynn Rowland and Barbara Ann Rowland.

About 1964, he married Carol Jones and brought in her four children, Larry, Dale, Jill and Raymie and raised them as his own. And they all lived in their little tiny home in Grassmere, WA with two bedrooms and one bath! Seven kids at times, they all shared bath water and all kinds of memories.

He started out working in the woods, a short time at Seattle City Light and then numerous shake mills until he and Carol were able to purchase their own mill, "Can't Hardly Shake Mill."  He purchased  this mill from Homer Bossart about 1972. He was well known for the quality of shakes he produced and sold. He and his sons worked in the woods cutting shake blocks for the business and worked until the Spotted Owl took away the timber industry. Then he and Carol bought a dump truck and ran that until retirement.

He loved wild blackberry picking , mushroom picking and "gambling."  Three of his girls enjoyed going to the casinos with him right up to the end. He also loved hunting and fishing for many years. He'd been going to Alaska with a group of guys every year for many years until his poor ol' body just couldn't take the traveling. He missed this year, but we were able to face time him to the group of guys while he was in the hospital last week. It was really good for him to see them.

In 2005, he married Peggy Pitman, bringing her two grown sons, Joe and Jeff Pitman to the family. They had nearly ten years together until her passing in 2015.

Malloy is survived by his children, Debbie Hill, Terry Craft and Bobbie Railsback, Larry, Dale, Jill and Ray Jones; very special nephew, Marty Rowland; sons with Peggy, Jeff (heather) and Joe Pitman and their children; 21 grandkids; 30 great great grandkids; lifelong friend of over 80 years, Bill Newby; brother-in-law, Bill Silves who he was also very close friends and a very special former son-in-law, Hector Lara who still called him Pops.

A Celebration of Malloy's life will be held at 2:00, Friday, August 2, 2024 at the Assembly of God Church, 45734 Main St, Concrete, WA. Malloy was laid to rest at Forest Park Cemetery. Share your memories of Malloy and sign the online guest register.
