Obituary

Lawrence Edward Kapoun , better known as Larry, passed away at home in Arlington, Washington November 13, 2023.  He was born August 18, 1946, in St. Paul, Minnesota, the first son of Frank and Cecilia Kapoun.

After Larry graduated from White Bear Lake High School, he enlisted in the US Navy and proudly served aboard the USS Suribachi as an electrician during the Vietnam era.  Upon discharge, he began his career in the elevator trade, working with Otis Elevator, mainly in the Tampa Bay/Clearwater Florida area.  In early 1984, he met the girl who would become his wife and soulmate.  Larry and Nadine (Locke) were married in July 1986 at St. Ignatius of Antioch Catholic Church, Tarpon Springs, FL.  For 18 years, they served together as ministers of the Eucharist in that parish.  In 2005, Larry retired from Otis Elevator with 40 years of union service, a member of the IUEC Local 74.  Upon retirement, Larry and Nadine moved cross country to settle in Arlington, WA to be near family.  There they became members of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Arlington, and Larry became a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus.  Larry devoted his retirement to serving the church, his family, and community.  He also enjoyed woodworking and was known as "Chair Man of the Board" for the hundreds of cedar Adirondack chairs he hand crafted.  Most of these chairs were made and donated to various community charities for auction items.  In late 2017, Larry was diagnosed with Stage 4 Prostate Cancer and began treatment in 2018.  He fought this battle knowing that he had a terminal disease, so endured every possible treatment and clinical trial available with the hope that he could help the physicians and researchers find the keys to help and perhaps cure others.  Larry's cancer battle has come to an end and one of his wishes was to share the reminder to all men: know your body and know your PSA to promote early detection of prostate cancer.

Larry leaves behind his wife, Nadine: step son, Mike (Nancy) Sexton; granddaughter, Mikayla (the treasure of Papa's heart).  Additionally, he leaves siblings, Charlotte Kapoun, Elizabeth Caron, Joseph (Kathy) Kapoun and Josie Proulx.  He also leaves many loving nieces and nephews and their families.  Larry also leaves behind his Brothers of the Knights of Columbus and Brothers of the IUEC Local 74.  Larry was a devoted friend and helper to all.

Larry now journeys to heaven to join his parents; oldest sister, Collette; several aunts, uncles, cousins, other family members, friends and adopted daughter, Jennifer.

We would like to thank Dr. Kojouri and his team at the Skagit Regional Cancer Center, Dr. Jessica Hawley and teams at the Fred Hutch Cancer Center in Seattle.  Each of you helped us along this journey with true compassion, professionalism, and understanding.  Additionally, thank you to his caring team from Hospice Northwest.  Finally, thank you to Fr. Ramon Santa Cruz and Fr. Tyler Johnson for being at our side every step of the way.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in early 2024 at Immaculate Conception Church, 1200 East 5th Street, Arlington, WA.  Watch for the date to be announced. Please share your memories of Larry and sign the online guest register.
