Michael Philip "Mike" Hankins

March 14, 1954 – April 21, 2025

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Michael Philip "Mike" Hankins, 71, of Sedro-Woolley, who departed this life at Skagit Regional Hospital due to acute heart failure.  Mike was surrounded by a loving family as he took his final breath.

Born on March 14, 1954, in Arlington, Washington to Vina Hinds and Lawrence Hankins, Mike grew into a man whose strength was matched only by his compassion. His strength of character left a lasting mark on all who knew him.

Mike dedicated his life to the forests of the Pacific Northwest, spending most of his career as a logger before establishing his own tree service business. His remarkable ability to scale towering trees with effortless grace became legendary among those who knew him. His hands, toughened by decades of honest labor, matched his uncompromising work ethic as he navigated rugged mountainsides day after day, harvesting timber and solving complex challenges that left others scratching their heads. With a brilliant mind for improvisation and creative problem-solving, Mike earned a reputation as a real-life MacGyver—ingeniously crafting solutions with whatever materials were at hand.

Wrestling was Mike's lifelong passion. An exceptional wrestler in his youth, he later channeled his knowledge and enthusiasm into coaching for the Steel Claw Wrestling Club, mentoring countless young athletes for many years. His commitment to supporting others extended beyond the mat—Mike rarely missed his children's and grandchildren's activities, making it his mission to be present for important moments in their lives.

Though Mike presented a tough exterior, those close to him knew his tender heart. His infectious laugh could light up any room, and his love for animals revealed the gentleness beneath his rugged appearance. He was a man whose word was his bond—trustworthy, reliable, and selfless to his core. Mike lived by a simple philosophy: serve others first, even when it meant personal sacrifice. This giving nature became his legacy, instilled in all who loved him.

Mike's greatest achievement was being an exceptional father and grandfather. He provided not just protection and strength, but encouragement and unconditional love. His children proudly carry forward the lessons he taught them about compassion, hard work, and integrity.

Mike is survived by his daughters, Melissa Hendrickson (Danny), Candice Hankins (Travis), Nicole Hansen (Jamin); step-son, James Catway; grandchildren, Cody, Kiersten, Mazie Hendrickson, Tatum Miller, Sadie Davis, Madyson Catway, Bryce and Nicholas Catway; great-grandchildren, Macie Davis and Frankie Robbins; siblings Virginia Dean, Danny Westby (Cammy), Linda West (Russ), Christine Long (Micheal), Liz Darrow (Ed), Clinton Osborn (Peggy), and Darold Westby (Tina); along with numerous extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his son, Michael Hankins Jr.; stepson Joey Catway; mother, Vina Osborn; father,  Lawrence Hankins; stepfathers, Clint Osborn, Donald J Westby; stepsister, Teresa Osborn.

A celebration of Mike's life will be held at Rosario Picnic Shelter S7 at Deception Pass on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 10:00 AM. This location holds special meaning, as Mike loved nothing more than gathering his family for KFC picnics by the water, where they would explore tide pools and play on the beach together. The shelter is located near the Rosario Beach Marine Laboratory. A Discovery Pass or day pass is required, and carpooling is recommended.

In honor of Mike's tradition, fried chicken will be provided, with additional potluck dishes welcomed. We invite all who knew and loved him to join us in celebrating his remarkable life, sharing stories, and—just as he would have wanted—enjoying the natural beauty of the beach and tide pools as he did with his family.
