Newell Ray Melton, age 80, was born to Merritt and Eleanor Melton in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, and died June 19, 2025, just 11 weeks following the passing of his wife, Babe Melton.

Ray was a lifelong resident of Skagit County.  His greatest joy was his family, the many friends he made during his lifetime, working around his property and spending time visiting with those throughout the community.  Ray worked for the City of Sedro-Woolley until his retirement in 2009.  Throughout his life Ray was active in the Punkin Center Volunteer Fire Department and the Hamilton Cemetery Association.

Ray is survived by his children, Cheryl (Steve) Holm and Brian Melton; grandchildren, Klhoé (Josh) Decker, Elizabeth (Josh) Melton, Noelan Melton; great-grandchildren, Emmett Decker, June Newell, Clay Newell, Babe Decker, Brody Decker and Jett Marble; sisters, Sharon (Bob) Garcia, Mary Melton; brother, Roger Melton; brothers-in-law Tom Moody, Danny (Donna) Moody; closest friend and brother-in-law, John Gallagher; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Roberta "Babe" Melton; his parents; sisters, Ruie (Earlie) Franks and Rhonda (Mike) Garcia; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Gallagher, Dorothy (Arlis) Lawler and Nelli (Tip) Mani; brothers-in-law, Mack Moody, Jack Moody, Ed Moody, John Moody, Jim (Nancy) Moody; and sister-in-law, Sharron Moody.

A Celebration of Life potluck gathering for family and friends will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2025 at 3:00 pm at the Lyman Town Park. Ray was laid to rest beside his wife in a private family inurnment at Hamilton Cemetery.
